MGP and the Pumpkin Patch
What the heck could that headline possibly mean? Bear with me, please. I recently did a video review on The Bourbon Show's Facebook page of Stephen Beam's Limestone Branch Distillery's Minor Case Rye. I know that's a mouthful. That shit is delicious though. Be sure to check it out. Also check out the video, over 5,000 views. Holla!
One thing that people who watched the video were mad curious about was whether or not I realized that the product was sourced from MGP. Two things you should know about me:
1. Yes, I always know whether or not I'm dealing with sourced material or not, I'm good at what I do.
2. I never care if it's sourced or not - there are laws in place on how you have to label sourced bourbon/rye and this bottle follows those laws to a T.
So what's the problem? If you're me, nothing. This rye is tremendous, distilled and aged in Indiana by one of the best distilleries in the country that only exists to source their delicious bourbon. So for starters I'm grateful to any producer that purchases the juice and bottles it for our consumption. You should be grateful too.
So what's this got to do with a pumpkin patch? Consider if you will, the Jack-O-Lantern. Have you ever gotten a compliment on a well crafted carved pumpkin? Did you do some research to decide the best pumpkin patch for your needs? Did you walk up and down the patch to select the perfect, orange, orb? Did you have a game plan for your design? Did you execute it to perfection? Did you put your finishing touch on it? Did you unveil it on Halloween to much plaudit? You worked your ass off on that work of art.
Did you immediately give all credit to the pumpkin patch?
Did people then start blogging about how you didn't grow that pumpkin? Did people stand with signs outside your house calling you a liar, deceitful, ruining the pumpkin industry? No. The pumpkin patch is suited to grow your pumpkin, and you do the rest.
Apply this same reasoning to sourced bourbon. Anyone bottling MGP is doing us a service by getting that juice out of the factory. MGP grows the pumpkin, NDP and hybrid distillers/NDPs are carving the jack-o-lanterns, don't knock them for not growing the pumpkin, enjoy the product that they crafting despite not planting the seeds.
Also, Metze's Select is one of the best bourbon's I've ever had. Yum.
